VIDEO: Body camera shows events leading up to police shooting in north Austin apartment
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Body camera video released by the Austin Police Department Monday shows the events before police shot a suspect they said was stabbing a woman in north Austin May 27.
Officers initially responded to an apartment complex on Tech Ridge Boulevard shortly after 1:34 a.m. after neighbors called 911 reporting they heard yelling, banging and someone calling for help. When police arrived, they heard a commotion and forced their way into an apartment, where they saw a man "actively stabbing" a woman, according to a police briefing.
The man was identified by the Austin Police Department as Ensel Maclare-Urgelles, 49.
According to APD, to "protect the life of the victim, an APD officer discharged their department-approved firearm, striking Mr. Maclare-Urgelles."
Police began life-saving measures for the woman, who had "multiple stab wounds," according to APD, and for Maclare-Urgelles until Austin-Travis County EMS arrived and took over.
ATCEMS transported both to local hospitals. The victim had life-threatening injuries but was in stable condition as of Monday, according to APD. Maclare-Urgelles was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. No officers were injured during the incident.
APD identified the officer who fired his firearm Monday as Cody Schulz, who has been with APD for six years. Schulz is on administrative leave per APD policy.
Police released body camera video for two officers, including Schulz, two 911 audio files and audio from police radio to its YouTube page.
As with all shootings involving an officer, two investigations are happening. One is criminal -- conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit and the Travis County District Attorney’s Office -- and the other is administrative -- conducted by the APD internal affairs unit overseen by the Office of Police Oversight.
