New mural to be added to historical 'Birthday Wall' in Breaux Bridge
BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KLFY) – Local artists Jessalyn Newton and Sarah Melancon say they are using their talents of public art to construct a 1500-square foot mural to beautify the birthday wall.
"The problem we have with the wall is that the banners stay up too long and so they start falling into the street and most of them are cardboard, so they go into the drain, and they got into the river and they're kind of a little bit of a hazard."
For 50 years, the birthday wall has been a staple in the community for people to hang posters of their birthdays. Now the mural has become old. The new mural will have a for the love of Breaux Bridge sign and a banner for others to write messages. "We want to take those personal messages especially from different ways that people say I love you and their families and bring those into the mural, so they're going to be everyone's personal messages and we're going to incorporate that into the design itself."
Another artist on the project, Sarah Melancon, says she hopes the mural will give others the courage to pursue art. "It's going to inspire, maybe there's a young artist out there that she or he is just like maybe I want to see this and it'll inspire them and something I would've appreciated as a young artist. I feel like it's gonna be really really good for Breaux Bridge."
The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2024. To reach their goal of $27,000 for the project, Newton says they will be holding a fundraiser, and they are looking for sponsors.
