Shawn Johnson’s Athletic Genes Are on Full Display in 5-Month-Old Baby Bear as He Nails a Major Milestone Months Early

Babies love to surprise their parents with new tricks they learned overnight. I swear, they have huge growth spurts while they’re sleeping, and the next day, they act like they’ve been this way all along. Shawn Johnson’s 5-month-old baby Barrett “Bear” Madison just debuted his new milestone skill for Instagram — and it’s obvious he got his athletic abilities from his mama!

The Olympic gold medalist shared a video with her youngest son, who she shares with husband Andrew East. “Our 5 month old woke up and did this …” Johnson wrote over the clip, who is on all four in the playroom, before turning to sit on his bottom. The little chunk glances back at his mom, looking adorable, and we can’t believe he’s already crawling!

Later, it cuts to another scene of Bear crawling while his mom watches on. “… And then did this …” she continues, as Bear pulls himself forward with both hands, then falls on his stomach. From there, he lifts up his legs and pushes himself up to all fours again to continue on.

“… And then did this!!!” she finishes, showing Bear just sitting up and chilling on the carpet, with no help from anyone around him at all. Johnson looks on with mouth wide open, clearly just as impressed with her baby boy as we are.

“He might be our most active baby yet ????????” the former gymnast captioned the sweet video.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), babies should learn how to sit with and without the support of their hands between 4-7 months old. So he’s right on track with that, but crawling? The organization says getting to sitting position without help, crawling forward on belly, assuming hands-and-knees position, and going from sitting to crawling are all things that you can expect between 8-12 months. And, again, baby Bear is only 5 months!!

“OMG.. he’ll be lifting weights in the garage gym next with Daddy ???????????????????????? tuning in next week for updates ????????????????,” one person joked. Another person commented, “???? active and adorable! ????”

Others credited Bear’s moves to the fact that he has two athletic parents (his dad is a former NFL player). “The kid has inherited all that strong muscle tone and gross motor skills from his amazing athletic parents ????????????????????,” one person wrote. Someone else said, “It’s like his mama is an Olympian or something❤️❤️.”

Johnson, who also shares daughter Drew, 4, and son Jett, 2, with East, opened up about how baby Bear was her “hardest” child to adjust to. In an interview with Us Weekly in March, she said about her youngest, “He’s just the happiest little camper, and so we’re figuring out that groove. But I’d say [baby] three was the hardest.”

She continued, “I feel like we’re slowly getting into a routine. It was touch and go there for a while, but we’re finally settling in, which is feeling more manageable. Honestly, the first couple weeks of three was super — it felt easy, as easy as it can be. The only hard part was he was our first kind of colicky baby. We had some things we needed to figure out, and we hadn’t dealt with that before.”

Despite the challenges of managing a baby and toddlers, Johnson said that they are keeping “adoption up as an option for us if we want to continue growing [our family.]” Hey, when you already have three kids to wrangle, what’s one more right?
