Study: Does police spending cut crime? Louisiana one of 10 US states with worst ROI

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A new study places Louisiana in the bottom 10 in the nation in return on investment on police spending.

The study by High Rise Financial used FBI crime data with state and local government spending reports from the U.S. Census Bureau to analyze how effectively funds are used to reduce crime rates.

States at the bottom of the list were Nebraska, Arkansas and South Carolina.

In Nebraska, for every $1,000 spent on police services, there are 149 crimes. In comparison, Arkansas, in second place, had 135 crimes per $1,000 of police spending, and South Carolina had 111 crimes for every $1,000 of police spending. 

The state of Louisiana ranked No. 7 with 93 crimes per $1,000 spent on police, according to the report. A total of $34.9 million per 100,000 people is paid to combat 3,235 crimes.
