Paterson teacher retiring after 50 years of service

PATERSON, N.J. (PIX11) -- Bessie Ames, a teacher in the Paterson School District since 1974, is retiring at the end of the school year after 50 years of service.

Ames currently teaches third grade at School 10. Her last day is June 27th.

On Monday, Ames’ students, along with district administrators and Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, recognized Ames’ service to the city.

“It’s very rare that anyone works anywhere for 50 years, let alone in a classroom,” said Mayor Sayegh. “So anytime we can celebrate an inspiration to thousands of students, we take full advantage of that opportunity.”

Ames has taught generations of students, some of whom grew up to became teachers and eventual colleagues. Ames said she currently works with three teachers at School 10 who were former students.

“I meet teachers all the time through the district who I’ve had as students,” said Ames.

Ames said teaching is something she will dearly miss. “When they [students] come into your classroom, you really have to motivate them, energize them, and get them involved in whatever you’re teaching,” said Ames.

Ames said she learned by watching what worked for other teachers and putting mental notes in what she calls her ‘trick bag.’ “I just kept continuously gathering different tricks,” said Ames.

Ames’ current students had high praise. “She’s kind and whatever I need help with, she will help me,” said third grader Mariana Gray.

“I love Miss Ames,” said student Jayrelise Arias. “She’s so pretty, and I love her kindness and energy.”

Ames plans to travel the country in her retirement and possibly write a book about her time as an educator.
