Simple Tow Bar Attachment for C/K
Folks, I got tired of renting a tow dolly every time I wanted to buy a pickup truck, so I came up with these simple brackets to attach a tow bar (pics attached). They bolt up where the tow hooks normally bolt in the 4WD trucks. Its a simple 1.5 square tube with 1 c-channel on each side (and a spacer plate to accommodate width of the tow bar attachment clevises). Its a little janky but its the material I had on hand in the shed and it works. I used spare body mount bolts (also had on hand) to attach the brackets to the truck. The existing tow hook bolts were too short, but the body mount bolts were too long so I used the tow hooks I had just unbolted as spacers underneath the brackets.
Worked great for two tows, I probably wouldnt trust them for cross-country but works great for local tows and Im sure could be improved with larger C-channel, provisions for locking the cross-bolt that attaches them (i.e., nylon nut, castle nut, etc), and right-size attachment bolts so I don't have to use the hooks as spacers. Putting out there for your consideration and any critiques you may have.
