Nicosia mayor: Tornaritis concedes defeat, congratulates Prountzos

With votes almost twice as much as his main rival, Charalambos Prountzos was effectively voted in as Nicosia mayor on Sunday.

At 8:35pm, Nicos Tornaritis who was seen as the main contender with Prountzos, called him to congratulate him for his win.

Prountzos’ headquarters burst into rounds of applause and cheers after the development.

“I have already spoken to him on the phone and congratulated him,” Tornaritis told reporters. He thanked the public, both those who voted for him and those who did not, and said the journey allowed him to speak to a myriad of people and hear their problems.

“I will always be next to Prountzos’ side for our Nicosia.”

By 8:30pm, Prountzos has 57.6 per cent of the votes, while Tornaritis had 29.7 per cent.

Prountzos had the backing of Akel, Edek, Volt, while Tornaritis was supported by Disy and Depa.

Disy party leader Annita Demetriou was expected to make statements soon.
