Report: Aston Villa are ready to challenge Spurs for 24-year-old centre-back
According to a report in L’Equipe (as relayed by GFFN), Aston Villa are now ready to challenge Tottenham and other clubs in the race for Nice centre-back Jean Clair-Todibo.
It has been well documented over recent weeks that Tottenham want to bolster their options at centre-back this summer and it was suggested last month by GFFN that Spurs are ready to reignite their interest in Todibo.
Todibo could be set for summer transfer
The outlet explained that the Lilywhites made a move for the Frenchman back in January but were priced out of the move at the time after the Ligue 1 club demanded €60m (£51.1m) for the player.
However, Nice are now allegedly willing to cash in on the centre-back for €40m (£34m), which is thought to have alerted both Spurs and Man Utd.
Todibo himself admitted in an interview with The Telegraph two weeks ago that he has had conversations with the Red Devils and the Lilywhites in the past.
Aston Villa enter the race for Jean-Clair Todibo
L’Equipe have now also talked up the possibility of Todibo exiting Allianz Riviera, revealing that the defender has been told he is free to leave.
However, the report says that quite a few clubs are now monitoring the player’s situation, with Aston Villa said to be the latest club to enter the race.
The publication adds that the Villans want to make new additions to their squad after qualifying for the Champions League and have identified the Nice star as the man to bolster their backline.
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not see Tottenham paying £35m-£40m on a fourth-choice centre-back.
I suspect that the North London club ended their interest in Todibo the moment they signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa back in January.
Tottenham should instead look to give Alfie Dorrington a chance in pre-season and spend the funds instead on a striker and number six.
