Pundit suggests Spurs could sign defender in a player-plus-cash deal this summer
According to Alan Hutton, Tottenham Hotspur could look to negotiate a swap deal for Leeds United youngster Archie Gray, but any potential move would involve Joe Rodon and a lot of money, too.
Rodon has just spent the last season on loan at Leeds United and was an integral figure in their run to the Championship play-off final. Unfortunately, the Yorkshire club could not secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Joe Rodon had a decent season on loan at Leeds United
The Welshman is wanted on a permanent basis by Leeds, but there is also thought to be interest from all three clubs which secured promotion to the Premier League last season in the form of Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton (Tottenham News).
Whatever does happen this summer for Rodon, we do know he has just had his contract extended by another 12 months by Spurs (Football.London).
While Leeds are interested in the Tottenham man, it has also been reported for some time that the Lilywhites are keen on signing Archie Gray from the Championship side. Liverpool are also thought to be an admirer of the teenage talent (Football Insider).
Spurs to swap Joe Rodon for Archie Gray?
Now, former Spurs man, Alan Hutton, has discussed the idea of Gray moving to the Premier League side as part of a swap deal for Rodon, telling Football Insider: “It would have to be big cash, not just Rodon, I think it would be a lot of money on top of that.”
Hutton praised Gray, adding: “He’s had an outstanding season. The guy has played at full-back, played in midfield, played as a number ten, the list goes on. I think he’s only going to get better. He plays with such freedom and it’s refreshing to see.
“The way Ange plays, that’s perfectly suited to him. He’s comfortable coming inside and taking the ball with his back to play and getting forward with his ability to cross into the box. He’s so young as well.
“It’s going to be a big fee, but looking to the future, if they can bring someone like him in now, he could be there for years to come. That would be a brilliant signing for them.”

I would love for Spurs to sign Archie Gray. To have him and Lucas Bergvall coming through in midfield would give us such a bright future, but we would have to make sure they both have a strong development path in the first team.
We have a number of promising players in the ranks which also includes Alfie Devine, however, we need to be careful to pick the right loan for them. Alejo Veliz’s spell at Sevilla is a prime example of how a loan deal can go completely wrong.
