The New York Mets enter the London Series finale Sunday four games out of a wild card spot. But at 27-36, they also sit 5 1/2 games ahead of the National League-worst Miami Marlins. Owner Steve Cohen sees the glass half full.

From May 1 to June 2, the Mets lost six games in which they had a lead after eight innings. No other team did it more than twice in that time.

“You can lose games and not describe it as mind boggling,” Cohen told reporters in London. “How we were losing, it was, you know, unusual …  and, so you can say, well, if we didn’t lose those games we’d be in a totally different place. But I think what it says is that that was unusual, it’s probably not going to continue and therefore you can have reason for optimism.”

With the trade deadline less than two months away, Cohen was asked how much weight he puts in the standings versus the team’s chances to make a run if it were to make the playoffs.

“Well, I mean, you know, you certainly want to have high standards,” the owner said. “If you get to the playoffs and you are four games under .500, it’s nice to make the playoffs and anything can happen we know that. But still you would say, ‘Wow, that was not optimal.’ Probably not the way you would envision it.

“And so, but I’ll say it again. Lot of games left and I actually think the team is starting to show signs. And so hopefully we’ll continue to improve and start winning some ballgames.”

The Mets have 17 games with teams in the wild card hunt between now and the All-Star break, including seven with the Washington Nationals.
