Taconic Hills' state title hopes dashed in Class B baseball final

VESTAL, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Taconic Hills baseball went on a run this season the program hadn't seen the likes of in 30 years, generating a buzz and excitement amongst the fanbase that will be remembered for years to come.

That run came to a somber conclusion, though, Saturday afternoon in the NYSPHSAA Class B championship game. The Titans fell to Section IX's Spackenkill, 6-2, capping an otherwise stellar campaign.

Spackenkill got the jump on Taconic Hills with a three-run second inning - the result of a Linus Oudom RBI double and ensuing Dan Collins two-run home run.

Collins also started on the mound for the Spartans, and had the Titan bats baffled for the first five innings, allowing just one hit during that stretch.

But Taconic Hills continued to fight, and finally broke through in the sixth frame. With two runners in scoring position, Gavin Hartka doubled to right field, plating both Jacob Alvarez and Brandon Rossano, which cut the deficit to one run at 3-2.

Collins managed to work out the inning, however, with the lead still intact. And the Spackenkill offense responded with three runs in the top of the seventh. Collins retired the Titans in-order in the home half, sealing the championship victory.

Taconic Hills earned the program's first sectional championship since 1994, before rattling off three straight state-tournament victories to land in the same spot where that 1994 team's season culminated.

The Titans finish the year with an impressive, 24-3 overall record.
