Report: Mourinho wants Spurs midfielder to be his first signing at Fenerbahce
According to a report in Sabah, Fenerbahce are ready to make an approach to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with the club’s new boss, Jose Mourinho, keen on reuniting with the Dane.
Mourinho was the man who brought Hojbjerg from Southampton to Tottenham four years ago and it was suggested by Milligazete earlier this week that the midfielder could once again reunite with the former Spurs boss in Istanbul.
Hojbjerg was a first-team regular for Tottenham under the management of Mourinho but has fallen down the pecking order this season with Ange Postecoglou preferring the likes of Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur as his midfield options.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is attracting transfer interest
Fenerbahce’s interest in the Tottenham star has now been backed up by Sabah, who say that the 28-year-old is free to leave the North London club and that Mourinho has identified him as a key target.
The report explains that the Portuguese coach has told the Turkish club’s hierarchy that he wants Hojbjerg to be the first signing of his tenure as he plots to regain the Super Lig title from local rivals Galatasaray next season.
Fenerbahce are ready to hold talks with Tottenham
In fact, it is suggested that Fenerbahce are now ready to open official transfer talks with Tottenham and the midfielder, having also previously approached the player last year.
Hojbjerg made the Tottenham starting eleven on just eight occasions in the Premier League last season and was brought off the bench 28 times (transfermarkt).
Spurs Web Opinion
Hojbjerg is entering the peak years of his career and I do not see him wanting to go to Turkey at this stage, particularly given that he is attracting interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Napoli ahead of the summer transfer window.
It is obvious that some media outlets from Turkey will churn out some reports linking Mourinho with some of his former players.
One thing is certainly clear, with Hojbjerg now in the final year of his contract, Tottenham need to cash in on the Dane this summer or risk him agreeing a pre-contract deal in January.
