Spurs contract decision sheds light on long-term plans for 25-year-old – Journalist

Football.London’s Rob Guest has suggested that Tottenham’s decision to offer Brandan Austin a long-term contract is perhaps a hit that the club potentially see him as a future number two.

Austin has been at Spurs since 2015 and progressed through the age group ranks to the senior squad but the goalkeeper is yet to make a single first-team appearance for the club.

He served as Guglielmo Vicario’s understudy during the final few months of last season after Fraser Forster’s injury, being an unused substitute in Tottenham’s final 14 league games of the term.

Earlier this week, Spurs confirmed that Austin had put to paper on a new five-year deal, thus committing his future to the club until 2029.

Guest now points out that the length of the contract offered to the 25-year-old is perhaps a sign that Ange Postecolgou sees him as the main backup to Vicario in the future.

The journalists say that Tottenham have no intention of loaning out the Englishman for the 2024-25 season, with the goalkeeper expected to remain with the squad.

He states that Spurs will have a decision to make on Forster’s future next summer as he will turn 36 and be out of contract. Gold alleges that the Tottenham coaching staff might thus decide to use Austin as Vicario’s understudy from the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

I do not agree with Guest’s thesis that offering a five-year contract to Austin is proof of Tottenham wanting him to become Vicario’s main backup.

It has become increasingly important for clubs to have a competent third-choice goalkeeper and that is the role the North London club might have envisioned for the 25-year-old.
