Ange Postecoglou now has three top-class central defenders at his disposal in the form of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin.

However, the Tottenham head coach admitted back in March that the North London club may need further reinforcements in central defence this summer as the club aim to build a strong squad which can compete on multiple fronts (Football.London).

Both Tosin Adrabioyo and Lloyd Kelly were mooted as targets for the North London club (Football.London) but according to reports over the last week, the Bournemouth and the Fulham stars are both edging closer to a free transfer to Newcastle United (Fabrizio Romano).

Spurs are also thought to be monitoring two centre-backs from Serie A – Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori (CalcioMercato) and Torino’s Alessandro Buongiorno (FCInterNews).

Centre-back is not a priority for Tottenham

However, Pitt-Brooke has now revealed that signing a central defender is not as big a priority for Tottenham as additions in other areas of the pitch.

The journalist does point out that a backup centre-back may become a necessity if both Emerson Royal and Ben Davies depart the club this summer as that would leave Postecoglou with just three senior options.

Pitt-Brooke adds that Spurs’ decision on whether to strengthen at the back may also depend on whether both Alfie Dorrington and Ashley Phillips go on loan or one of them stays as a part of the squad.

Spurs Web Opinion

Rather than signing just another backup centre-back, Tottenham will likely look for a versatile defender, who can cover at centre-back as well as one of the full-back roles. That is why the Riccardo Calafiori and Trevoh Chalobah links make a lot of sense.
