Late season atmospheric river arrives in Oregon

0

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — It's time to gear up for some big changes in our weather starting with a soggy Sunday across the PNW.

A moderate to strong atmospheric river -- rare for this time of year – is set to hit our region Sunday and linger into Monday. Moderate to heavy rain will be found around the Oregon Coast and Willamette Valley on Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening. We should expect plenty of local ponding on the roadways Sunday.

Rain totals are expected to reach or exceed an inch through the valley by Monday night.

The coast and the Cascades could see upwards of four inches of rain accumulated from Sunday into Monday.

The wet weather trend along with cool daytime highs in the low- to mid-60s will be sticking around through the start of our new week. However, by Monday afternoon the rain will transition into on-and-off-again showers.

Summer-like heat is expected over the western half of the country by the late next week -- as we say hello to summer vibes with a ridge of high pressure starting to build by the middle part of the week.

Looking at Friday into next weekend, afternoon temperatures around the Portland metro area could reach the upper 80s or hover right around 90 degrees on Friday.

But before the sunshine arrives, grab the rain gear and expect ponding on the roadways Sunday.

Keep it locked on KOIN 6 for the very latest on your weather forecast.
