South Africa's ANC calls demands for President Ramaphosa to step down for coalition talks a 'no-go'

0
A top official says South Africa’s African National Congress party will not consider any demands from possible coalition partners that President Cyril Ramaphosa step down as a condition for negotiations. The ANC experienced a stinging rebuke in Wednesday's election when it lost its 30-year majority. It means South Africa must form a coalition government for the first time. The ANC will be the biggest party at 40% of the vote. One possible coalition partner has said Ramaphosa must go as ANC leader for talks to go ahead. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says that's a “no-go area.”
