The Lakers may be looking at Scott Brooks and Rajon Rondo as assistant coaches while they continue their search for the next head coach.

With the Lakers firing Darvin Ham after two seasons, along with the rest of the coaching staff, they have a lot of work to do to rebuild the staff.

JJ Redick appears to be the frontrunner, but other coaching candidates, such as James Borrego, have reportedly met in-person with the Lakers, so the coaching search is far from over.

This process has been ongoing for weeks and Dan Woike of the LA Times has reported on a few new names that are being mentioned as potential assistant coach options on the Roggin and Rodney show.

“Scott Brooks is a name I’ve heard. James Borrego is a name I’ve heard. Jared Dudley is a guy that has real close LeBron James ties and has obviously done a really good job in Dallas. Rajon Rondo is a name that I reported this week that got people in a tizzy a little bit on the internet as a player they could add to a coaching staff.”

Scott Brooks, as an assistant coach, would bring a lot of experience to the Lakers' staff. He was the head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2008-15 and is currently an assistant for the Trail Blazers.

Rajon Rondo is known for being a highly intelligent player. In 2019, when he was a Laker, he expressed an interest in coaching.

He was part of the 2020 title team and undoubtedly has the respect of current Lakers All-Stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, given his rapport with them back when was their teammate.

Rondo is also a fan favorite despite most of his NBA career happening as a Boston Celtic, so the point guard becoming a Lakers assistant would be a good PR move and loved by everyone, at least initially.

It will be interesting to see who the Lakers will select as their head coach and how involved the organization will be in who sits alongside them as part of the staff.

Some head coaches would undoubtedly pushback on not having full control over who is or isn’t on the staff. However, if the person taking on the job is someone who has never coached at the NBA level, like a Redick, I can see why there’d be less hesitance on the franchise selecting some assistants to help guide the rookie.

For now, it appears the Lakers are hard at work looking for both a head coach and some assistant candidates that could help bolster the staff.
