Novato marked the arrival of Pride Month on Saturday with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.
The national tradition began with Gay Pride Week in 1970. The event commemorated the first anniversary of the police raid at Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, on June 28, 1969.
In 1999, President Bill Clinton proclaimed June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
