Man dead after hitting excavator and dump truck at closed construction zone in Carroll County
A man is dead after hitting an excavator and a dump truck Friday night in Carroll County, police say.
Shortly before 11:30 p.m., Geoffrey Brittingham, 41, of Hampstead, was driving on Emory Road at Cedarhurst Road with his 7-year-old son when investigators believe he failed to stop for a closed construction zone at the North Branch Patapsco River bridge replacement project, Maryland State Police said in a news release.
Police say Brittingham hit the back of a 2014 Volvo excavator and a nearby Mack dump truck. According to police, he was pronounced dead on scene and Brittingham’s son, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the accident, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for treatment.
The construction zone was inactive at the time of the accident and no other injuries were reported. The Maryland State Police Crash team is investigating the incident.
The North Branch Patapsco River bridge will be closed for an extended period, and drivers are asked to use Route 30 and Route 140 as detour routes, police said.
