Portland Center Stage's 2024-25 lineup ranges from classic plays to new hits.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Center Stage has opened the curtains on its diverse lineup of shows for the 2024-2025 season.

The organization’s upcoming season runs from Sept. 29, 2024, through June 29, 2025. The nine shows range from theater classics to modern productions.

“This season’s lineup is fierce, speaking directly to our current lives as we center joy, fight for our democracy, and offer a space to wrestle with our own humanity,” Portland Center Stage Artistic Director Marissa Wolf said. “Join us for a season of energetic, expansive, transcendent theater on our stages!”

The season will commence on the U.S. Bank Main Stage with “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” the 1979 musical that went on to win eight Tony Awards. In 2007, it was adapted into a film starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Held in the Ellyn Bye Studio, “Liberace & Liza: Holiday at the Mansion (A Tribute)” will be the next show to premiere. Jillian Snow and David Saffert wrote the production, and will star as music icons Liza Minnelli and Liberace.

Another highlight of the upcoming season is “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” which debuted on Broadway last year. The play tells the story of an African hair salon in New York’s Harlem neighborhood.

Additionally, the theater company will present “Chris Grace: As Scarlett Johansson.” The production pokes fun at the 2017 film “Ghost in the Shell” in which Johansson portrayed a Japanese cyborg.

“In a tour-de-force one-person farce that The Guardian describes as ‘mind and character bending,’ Asian-American actor and comedian Chris Grace explores the bounds of an artist’s identity,” Portland Center Stage said.

The season will close with Kamilah Bush’s world-premiere adaptation of “The Importance of Being Earnest” originally written by Oscar Wilde. Bush’s take on the classic comedy is compared to popular media like “Bridgerton,” “Saltburn,” and “Gossip Girl.”

Other productions include “Twelfth Night, Or What You Will,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” “The Light” and “The Brothers Size.”
