'Like he hit a dog': OKC man charged in connection to deadly hit-and-run
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The Oklahoma County District Attorney's office has filed charges against a man accused in a deadly April hit-and-run.
Court documents say the incident happened just before 7 p.m. April 30th near Southeast 15th Street and South High Avenue.
When Oklahoma City police responded to the area they found a man lying in the road, unresponsive.
Witness Patricia Preston told police she noticed a White Hummer with silver rims driving recklessly through her apartment complex before leaving and heading southbound on High Avenue.
Preston told News 4 employees she saw the victim, Carlos Lewis, leave the complex on a bicycle before the truck and heard a loud "bam." She said she and other neighbors went to investigate and found Lewis in the road.
"You can see the man's bones," said Preston. "It was terrible. I mean, I wouldn't do a dog like that."
Documents say police were able to find the truck parked in the backyard of a resident near Southeast 25th and I-35.
Ellias Estrada was taken into custody in connection to the crash. Documents say he admitted to police he had been driving the vehicle involved. Documents also say that his driver's license was revoked.
News 4 employees spoke with Lewis' loved one's who say the incident still feels surreal.
"He says, I'm going out and I'll call you when I get back, Mom," Earlene Royal, Lewis' mother said. "And he said, I love you; and I said, I love you too."
Royal said that was the last conversation she had with her son before getting the call surrounding the crash. Royal described Lewis as happy-go-lucky and said that he loved working with people. She said he was a father, brother and great son that she missed having conversations with.
"In the evening when I'm out, I'm thinking he's going to, you know, come back," said Royal.
Lewis' brother, Bryant Calloway, told News 4 employees he couldn't believe some of the details he read in an initial police report, calling Estrada cruel.
"Just the thought that after reading the police report that a person could just blindly run someone over and leave them laying in the street," said Calloway. "Like, like if he hit a dog or something."
Estrada has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatality collision and causing a fatality without a valid driver's license. He's being held in the Oklahoma County Jail on a $225,000 bond.
