Journalist Josh Hughes has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur do not intend to offload Giovani Lo Celso this summer and are instead trying to offer the midfielder a new contract.

Lo Celso has struggled for game time under Ange Postecoglou and it has been widely reported over the last few weeks that the midfielder’s five-year spell at the North London club is expected to come to an end this summer.

The latest outlet to make this claim was The Standard, which revealed on Thursday that with the Argentine how having just a year left on his deal, Spurs are now listening to offers for him ahead of the summer window.

It was reported by Estadio Deportivo earlier this week that Real Betis are keen on re-signing the 28-year-old and are in contact with Tottenham as well as the player’s camp over a potential transfer.

New contract for Lo Celso at Tottenham?

However, Hughes has now revealed that Ange Postecoglou’s men want to hold on to Lo Celso and are willing to offer him a contract extension.

He told The Spurs Chat Podcast: “I don’t know because the last I have heard is that Spurs were looking to try to offer him a new contract which is absolutely baffling because he’s not getting minutes. I don’t recall a time this season where he’s been bad on the pitch.”

I can understand why Ange would want to keep Lo Celso around as a squad player, with the midfielder being able to cover for several positions. The 28-year-old also impressed whenever he got an opportunity this season.

However, I would be quite surprised if the Argentine stayed put at Hotspur Way as he will be keen to play regular football at this stage of his career.
