Top European holiday hotspot to scrap entry fees for 38 tourist attractions
A EUROPEAN hotspot has revealed they are scrapping entrance fees to at least 38 popular tourist attractions.
Their minister for culture announced that entry to the sites would be free every day of the week.
Portugal has become a top holiday destination in recent years with its brilliant art galleries and museums.
However, sadly, the free entry won’t apply to tourists – you have to be a resident or a national.
Those living in the European hotspot will be entitled to 52 free entries into any site managed by the Museums and Monuments of Portugal.
The scheme is set to begin soon and locals will be able to apply on their phones.
The announcement was made at the National Museum in Viseu on May 18 to celebrate International Museum Day.
Portuguese residents can now visit up to 16 national heritage sites included in the scheme for free.
Astonishingly, one in five Brits have never been to an art gallery because they’re too “posh” to visit.
A survey of 2,000 adults found 29 per cent were worried they would find it boring while 14 per cent thought they would struggle to understand the art they are looking at.
Around 46 per cent believe the idea that a gallery is only for ‘posh’ people is a common misconception, while 43 per cent think it’s wrong that they are only seen as interesting if you like art.
It also emerged 40 per cent think galleries should be places where it’s time for fun, while 31 per cent want joy – not serious and formal, with sculpture and interactive installations rated most enjoyable.
The study was commissioned by Gala Bingo to launch its ‘All The Calls Galary’ – a two-day bingo-themed free art exhibition in Manchester on 17th and 18th February.
Sara Jolly, head of the brand, said “It’s interesting to see the different perceptions of art galleries.
“Art galleries are not exclusive clubs for the elite, they are open forums for creativity and expression.
“Anyone can walk through those doors and connect with the beauty and diversity of art.
“Contrary to the misconception that art galleries are reserved for a select few, they are welcoming spaces where individuals from all walks of life can explore, appreciate, and find inspiration.”
The study also found the average art-enjoyer visits four galleries a year and has five pieces of art in their homes or gardens.

And two capital cities in Europe will soon be linked by a direct train service for the first time in over a decade.
