One woman was killed and three others were injured after a Brink’s truck collided with a disabled SUV on the Gold Star Bridge on Interstate 95 South in Groton on Friday evening.

A Ford Edge was traveling southbound on I-95 around 6:42 p.m. on Friday just south of the Exit 83 on-ramp on the Gold Star Bridge when it experienced a “mechanical failure,” according to the Connecticut State Police.

When the Ford came to a stop within the southbound travel lanes, a Freightliner cash-in-transit vehicle owned by Brink’s struck the rear end of the SUV, state police said.

The Ford driver, a 52-year-old man, and the front seat passenger, a 54-year-old woman, were transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for suspected minor injuries, according to state police. The rear passenger, identified as 76-year-old Evelyn Diment, was seriously injured and transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, state police said. All three were listed as residing in Winamac, Indiana.

The Brink’s truck driver, a 37-year-old woman from New London, was also transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, according to state police.

The crash remains under investigation, state police said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashboard camera video is asked to contact Trooper Christopher Brett at 860-848-6540.
