Mitchell-Linden Library in Queens opens new computer center

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- If you use the library in Flushing, you’re in for a treat. The Queens Public Library has expanded one of its locations.

On Friday, library officials were on hand with State Sen. John Liu and Assemblymember Ron Kim to unveil the new computer center at the Mitchell-Linden Library.

"The library will be an even more valuable resource center for homework, story time, seniors can use the computers," said Dennis Walcott, the president and CEO of the Queens Public Library.

“More jobs will be available as a result of the expansion once we have a budget in place," Walcott added.

The expansion adds 700 square feet to the library, plus nine new computers, two printers and an adult reading area.

While the space is open to all ages, leaders said its impact on children will be immense.

“When they come into this safe space, they stay curious and this is a space where they can find their passion and purpose and in a world that is so distracting to kids," Kim said.

Members of the community agree.

“We have a lot of children being born, and a library is vital, and I find that a lot of families can’t afford what a library can offer the kids," said Arlene Fleishman, the president of Mitchell-Linden Civic Association. "And any community you need the facilities like a library to grow to learn to do.”

Flushing resident Ryan Jeong loves coming to the Mitchell-Linden Library. He’s there a few times per month to use the computer and printer. He plans to return and is grateful for the investment in the community.

“This is very nice for our neighborhood. For students. I’m glad they’re doing this,” Jeong said.

The expansion cost half a million dollars and was paid for by the Queens Public Library.
