Closed bedroom doors save Manhattan family from overnight fire

0

MANHATTAN (KSNT) - A Manhattan volunteer firefighter and his family escaped a large house fire Friday morning, thanks to some basic fire safety tips.

The family climbed out of the window of the burning house. They had the opportunity to escape as they had their bedroom doors closed when they were asleep.

The inside of the house was severely destroyed, but the bedrooms took minimal damage.

"Sleeping with the door closed, you keep smoke and heat out of the bedroom," Riley County Fire Chief Russel Stukey said. "People that do not survive fires, typically it's the smoke that gets to them before the actual heat or flame."

Riley County Fire told 27 News they teach this to residents as it can save lives during a house fire. The Riley County Firefighters Association is accepting monetary donations for the family who is needing a place to live.
