Alasdair Gold says one Tottenham youngster has bulked up a lot in the last year

Alasdair Gold has said that Dane Scarlett has now bulked up and now looks a lot more physically imposing than he previously did.

While Scarlett was seen as the academy prospect who was the closest to becoming a first-team regular until around 18 months ago, the teenager’s stock has fallen since and he has been overtaken by the likes of Jamie Donley, Alfie Devine, and arguably even Will Lankshear. 

The striker failed to hit the expected heights at Portsmouth in League One in the 2022-23 season and he did not make a single start for Ipswich Town in the Championship during the first half of the campaign just passed.

Tottenham thus decided to recall the youngster in January and the fact that he has represented the Lilywhites in the Carabao Cup meant that he could not be loaned out again, with the rules not permitting players to play for three different English clubs in the same season.

That meant that the 20-year-old essentially had to warm the bench for the last few months but it looks like the youngster has used the time to get physically stronger in the gym.

After watching Scarlett play in Tottenham’s post-season friendly against Newcastle, Gold noted just how different the striker looks and suggested that his holdup play could improve.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “Dane did well in terms of getting into good positions. He looks like he’s bulked up.

“Seeing him on the pitch and then seeing him walk through the mixed zone afterwards, he looks like he’s been working on his physique which is good, that’s what he will need to hold up the ball in any type of football.”

Previous Tottenham managers were using Scarlett as a wide-forward perhaps because they did not feel he was physically strong enough to lead the line. That is something the youngster has now seemingly worked on as it is clear that his future is as a number nine.
