De L’Écrin Residence
De L’Écrin Residence is a minimalist home located in Montreal, Canada, designed by APPAREIL Architecture. The duplex, divided into two condominiums, posed unique challenges in expanding the ground-floor living space without compromising the upper condo. The solution was an elegant extension into the backyard, which simultaneously provided the upper condo with a new terrace. This design effectively separates the access points to these outdoor areas, thereby maintaining the privacy and peace between neighbors. The project was sensitive to the building’s context within a densely populated area, prioritizing sustainability in both social and environmental aspects.
Architect Marie-Andrée Bérubé and her team initiated a feasibility study to explore expansion options that would adhere to city regulations and the original budget. This study led to the redevelopment of the rear portion of the residence, incorporating a kitchen and dining area that descends into a multi-level terrace. Interior design elements, executed by Esther Leduc, play on contrasts to enrich the space. Walnut cladding adds warmth against the cooler tones of polished concrete floors, stainless steel cabinets, and quartz countertops. Additionally, fine vertical ceramic tiles on curved walls introduce a handcrafted feel, contrasting with the sleek metal surfaces. Underneath this renovation, a new radiant heating system was installed to address insulation issues, enhancing comfort across seasons. Outdoors, extended walls around the terrace create a secluded, porch-like area that offers shelter and allows for natural ventilation.
