David Peterson Set To Return, Will Start On Wednesday Against Dodgers
The New York Mets are adding another starting pitcher to their rotation. The team officially announced on Sunday that left-handed starter David Peterson is ready to come off the injured list and will start Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field. This move will relegate Adrian Houser back to the bullpen.
The 28-year-old Peterson has been on the shelf since the beginning of the season recovering from offseason hip surgery. Peterson has not pitched in a major-league game since September 28 of 2023. Last season, he posted a 5.03 ERA across 111 innings. The 4.96 xERA he posted in 2023 was the second-highest mark of his career (5.96 xERA in 2021).
Peterson has posted terrific results while rehabbing throughout the Mets’ minor league system. Across three different levels of the system, he allowed only three earned runs in 23 2/3 innings (1.14 ERA). Peterson did not allow a home run, struck out 35, and most importantly, only walked three. His most recent rehab start was with Triple-A Syracuse on May 26 where he threw 89 pitches. It was his roughest outing of his rehab stint, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned).
Peterson’s historical performance in the major leagues has been so-so. His best season was 2022 where he posted a career-low 3.94 xERA. Outside that, his underlying statistics have largely been underwhelming. A key to success when coming back will to be limiting walks (has yet to post a walk rate better than the league’s 25th percentile). Regardless, the hope is he will be an upgrade over Houser and his 7.88 ERA thus far this season.
