Alfie Devine has said that he feels he has improved as a player after going through the highs and lows of his last 12 months out on loan.

There is a lot of excitement at Hotspur Way about Devine’s potential and we saw glimpses of his quality during the pre-season friendlies last summer, with the Tottenham youngster impressing in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

The 19-year-old was loaned out to Port Vale during the first half of the 2022-23 season and he made an instant impact, making it almost seem like League One football was too easy for him.

Tottenham thus made the decision to recall him and send him on loan to Plymouth Argyle in the Championship in January and the midfielder did not have the easiest of starts to life at Home Park Stadium.

Devine struggled to establish himself in the starting eleven in his first few months at the club but he finished the season strongly, helping the Pilgrims secure their Championship status.

When asked about his spells out on loan, he told PA Sport: “The aim when I went out was to come back a better person and a better player. Hopefully, I have done both of them over both loans.

“I think I have experienced a lot, some good moments and also some bad moments, which you are going to get in football. I am glad they both went how they did.”

Alfie Devine has an open mind about Spurs pre-season

Earlier this month, Plymouth Herald reported that Argyle had already opened conversations with Spurs about re-signing both Devine and Ashley Phillips out on loan.

When asked if he foresees himself heading out on loan again in the summer, the Spurs midfielder responded: “I don’t like to come in with a plan. Come the start of the season, you come in for pre-season, go with it and try to impress as much as possible.

“If at the end of it, I stay or if I go on another loan again, either way, I am sure it will be the right decision and whatever the manager wants to do as well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Having had a taste of senior football, I do not think Devine would want to warm the bench at Spurs next season.

Having said that, the Europa League might be the ideal stage for the midfielder to get some minutes, which is why I would not be surprised if Postecoglou decides to keep him at Hotspur Way for the first half of the season.
