Northamptonshire Police said this evening that they are investigating the tragic incident.

Their statement read: “An investigation is underway after a 45-year-old man sadly died following a collision between two gliders at an airfield, near Brackley.

“Police, fire, and the ambulance service attended the airfield at Hinton-in-the-Hedges shortly before 4pm today (Saturday, May 25), following reports that two aircraft had collided as they came into land.

“Northamptonshire Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances around the incident to understand the cause of the collision.

“They will remain at the site while this takes place.”

It follows the horrific Spitfire crash today during a Battle of Britain event.

The plane came down just after 1pm, killing an RAF pilot at the Coningsby base in Lincolnshire.

Emergency services gathered around the wreckage of the plane just feet away from a house.

The pilot was taking part in a civilian airshow just nine miles from the base to commemorate the RAF’s role in fending off German attacks during the Second World War.

Cops have asked people to quote incident number 340 of 25/05/24 when contacting police about the plane crash in Brackley today.
