Summer heat builds around Oregon, Washington over Memorial Day weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- It's a damp and mild start to the unofficial start to summer around the Portland-Vancouver metro area.

Scattered rain showers and cooler-than-average temperatures will remain over much of the Willamette Valley Saturday. Warmer, sunnier and drier conditions are expected by the end of the long holiday weekend.

Portland-Vancouver metro area

Temperatures will warm into the low to mid-60s around the metro area Saturday as scattered rain showers remain. It won't be a washout, but a few stray showers might come down heavy at times. Skies will remain mostly cloudy through the day as drier conditions push back into the region.

Temperatures will continue to build around the Portland metro area Sunday with more sunshine expected. The drying and warming trend will be perfect for the Portland Rose Festival City Fair that goes through Monday. Summer-like heat is expected to return to much of western Oregon and Washington by Memorial Day as temperatures warm close to 80 degrees.

Coastal weekend weather

Lingering rain showers will remain along the Oregon and Washington Coast through Sunday morning. The increased cloud coverage and few showers will keep temperatures in the 50s through most of the weekend.

Monday's the pick of the week to spend time along the beach. Sunny skies will return as temperatures warm into the low 60s.

Mountain weekend weather

Late-season snow is keeping skiers and snowboards going up at Timberline. A few additional inches of snow is expected Saturday on Mt. Hood. Drier, warmer and sunnier weather will start to dominate the forecast by Sunday and last through Monday.

Perfect bluebird ski conditions are expected over Mt. Hood through the end of the weekend.

Portland's extended weather outlook

The summer-like heat that builds over western Oregon and Washington on Monday will quickly fade on Tuesday. The chance of afternoon rain showers will help increase the cloud coverage and drop temperatures back into the upper 60s to low 70s.

Afternoon highs will stabilize in the mid to upper 60s through Thursday. That comes with a scattered rain potential. Warmer and drier weather returns again and just in time for the following weekend.
