Fabrizio Romano provides update on Spurs striker hunt – Including Ivan Toney
Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Tottenham Hotspur have still not made a final decision on whether to push ahead with a move for Ivan Toney this summer.
It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that Spurs are expected to enter the market for a marquee number nine this summer.
The latest such update came a couple of days ago from ESPN, who suggested that Richarlison could be on his way out of Hotspur Way this summer and that Ange Postecoglou had asked the club to sign a centre-forward, with Toney one of the names on his wishlist.
Earlier this week, GiveMeSport had also suggested that the Brentford star fits the bill for what Spurs are looking for but the publication explained that the Bees were demanding £60m for their star man, which the Lilywhites had no intention of paying.
Tottenham need to make Ivan Toney decision
Romano has now said that while Toney is highly likely to exit the Gtech Community Stadium this summer, the likes of Spurs and Man Utd have not decided whether to pursue the player.
The journalist told CaughOffside: “Ange Postecoglou has spoken publicly about wanting to bring new attacking players to Tottenham, but it’s still early to name specific names so I don’t have these for now.
“There are many names under consideration, so we will be clear in the next weeks. An important first step will also be to decide on Timo Werner, then all the other options. Tottenham will take their time for these kind of deals, but for sure there’s interest in bringing in one or two offensive players.
“Ivan Toney is one name I’ve been asked about with Tottenham, after months of links with other clubs as well. It remains a strong possibility for Toney to leave Brentford if top clubs arrive with proposals.
“He’s an option for several clubs, again Tottenham still have to decide what kind of player they want to bring in, same for Man United… but for sure, there’s a good chance for Toney to leave Brentford for a new club this summer.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I can only see Tottenham making a move for Toney this summer if they cash in on Richarlison, which I think is quite unlikely. I suspect Postecoglou would prefer to keep the Brazilian and add a cheaper option like Serhou Guirassy to the squad to compete with the former Everton man.
