Lucas Bergvall reveals why he chose Spurs despite ‘crazy’ Barcelona meeting
Lucas Bergvall has revealed that even when he had flown to Catalonia to meet Barcelona sporting director Deco in January, his gut was always telling him that Tottenham would be the better choice.
It has been well-documented that Spurs saw off competition from Barcelona to land Bergvall on deadline day in January (Sport).
There has been a lot written in Spanish press over the past couple of months about how Tottenham beat Barcelona to the player, with some outlets suggesting it was down to the Premier League side offering more money (Matteo Moretto).
In fact, some reports in Spain have even suggested that the Catalan club felt that the midfielder and his entourage simply used their interest to get a better offer from the Lilywhites (Sport).
However, Djurgarden sports coordinator Peter Kisfaludy rubbished these suggestions last month, telling Aftonbladet that the teenager simply got a better feeling from Tottenham.
Why did Bergvall choose Spurs over Barcelona?
Bergvall himself has now opened up on his decision, explaining that he was always leaning towards Spurs, given their style of play and the direction the club is heading in.
The 18-year-old has now told The Athletic: “We were eating in the mountains with Deco, we looked outside and there were 150 people trying to get in. We got into a taxi, drove into the city and they were following us. We got into a garage and switched cars.
“It was a crazy day. I came home and needed to decide, but my gut feeling was always Tottenham. They play really good football and it’s fun to watch. Ange is doing a great job. When you’re looking at the team you feel like they’re going to new areas and are starting to build something.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This is further evidence that young, up-and-coming players now see Tottenham as an ideal destination for them to develop, which evidently was not the case under previous regimes at the North London side.
