Alan Brazil was left absolutely astonished when he learned that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United played a friendly in Australia on Wednesday.

Both Spurs and the Magpies flew halfway around the world just days after their Premier League campaigns came to an end to play each other in a friendly at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The two sides played out an entertaining game in front of a huge crowd, most of whom were backing the Lilywhites, with James Maddison’s opener being cancelled out by Alexander Isak’s equaliser.

It was Eddie Howe’s men who had the last laugh as they emerged 5-4 winners in a penalty shootout.

According to Football Insider, the match not only allowed Spurs to connect with their growing fan base in Australia but also served another purpose.

It was revealed that Tottenham chiefs had accompanied the team Down Under and they explored new commercial deals for the club in the days they spent in the country.

Tottenham criticised for post-season friendly in Australia

Whatever the reason for the trip, Brazil believes that it is unfair to ask the players to get on a plane and fly to the other corner of the world just hours after the end of the season.

The pundit told talkSPORT [23/05 7:21 am]: “It’s madness. Absolute madness taking them out there, especially with the Euros coming up. I don’t care, getting on the plane for 20 hours is just ridiculous.

Gabriel Agbonlahor responded: “Listen, the managers will be fuming, the players will be fuming, even people at the club will be fuming. But the hierarchy will be saying this is about the money, making money, sponsorships or whatever it is.

“I think it’s a disgrace. As a player, you’ve played a long, gruelling season, little knocks… everyone on the plane, we’re going to Australia.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This friendly in Australia was certainly not fair on the players, particularly the ones who will be featuring in Copa America and the Euros this summer.

The PFA might already be lobbying the Premier League to make rules against having friendlies at the end of the season to ensure that other clubs do not repeat this in the future.
