Cavs considering Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego for coach opening
Cavs begin their search for a new head coach.
The Cleveland Cavaliers will reportedly form a list of head coaching candidates to replace J.B. Bickerstaff. Two names to watch are Golden State Warriors’ assistant Kenny Atkinson and former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego.

Atkinson spent four years as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets and 11 more seasons as an assistant in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Golden State. He was part of the coaching staff that won a title with the Warriors in 2022 and previously coached both Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert in Brooklyn.
Borrego, who currently serves as an assistant coach in New Orleans, is the other lead candidate for Cleveland according to The Athletic. He has five years of experience as a head coach – though notably, never in the playoffs. Borrego is touted as an offensive-minded head coach, something that should interest a Cavalier squad that has felt underwhelming on this end of the floor.
The Cavaliers are searching for a coach who can get them to the next level. Bickerstaff helped guide them through the early stages of their rebuild – but the expectations have outgrown what he is seemingly capable of. A fresh approach is desired, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
A new coach could certainly bring a fresh approach. It is worth noting, however, that Bickerstaff had more experience than both Atkinson and Borrego. There is no guarantee that the grass will be greener no matter who the Cavaliers choose as their replacement. While many fans had their wishes granted through Bickerstaff’s dismissal – the challenge now is finding an upgrade.
