Canada’s Denis Shapovalov was eliminated Thursday during the second round of the Geneva Open.

Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands rallied to defeat Shapovalov 6-7 (7), 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a match that was delayed due to rain.

The match was all knotted up 3-3 in the second set Wednesday when play was suspended. Griekspoor had five aces, six double faults, and landed 57 per cent of his first serves.

Griekspoor will face 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Djokovic celebrated his 37th birthday Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Yannick Hanfmann to advance.

Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., will next play in the French Open facing Luca Van Assche in the opening round Sunday.
