Global backing for Palestine as independent state sparks reactions
Countries like Norway, Ireland, and Spain have expressed support for Palestine as an independent state, coinciding with the International Criminal Court’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel. These stances against Israel have drawn Tel Aviv’s ire and have resulted in a wave of international solidarity and support for Palestine.
Palestine submitted a request for full membership in the United Nations to the Security Council last month and earlier this month, which ultimately led the United States to exercise its veto power to prevent the realization of Palestine’s recognition as an independent state. The UN’s self-governing body, the Palestinian Authority, labeled this move as “unjust.”
While the United States thwarted Palestine’s full membership, negotiations in the General Assembly of the United Nations have shown that the overwhelming majority of countries want Palestine to have full membership.
This Assembly, convened on May 10th, voted to grant Palestine “new rights and privileges” and urged the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s bid to become the 194th member of the United Nations.
With 143 votes in favor, 9 against, and 25 abstentions, the global assembly endorsed a resolution in support of Arab and Palestinian aspirations, advocating for the granting of new privileges to Palestine as an independent state.
