Alan Shearer says Spurs need to sign top-class players in two areas this summer
Alan Shearer has urged Tottenham Hotspur to prioritise signing a centre-forward and a new number-eight during the summer transfer window.
The poor end that Spurs had to the 2023-24 season has left people in no doubt that there are a lot of gaps in the squad, with the club having plenty of work to do if they wish to close the gap on the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
Ange Postecoglou will want to mould the squad to better suit his style of play and according to various reports, the Australian has already told the Tottenham hierarchy what he wants.
This was according to a report in ESPN, which claimed the Spurs head coach is realistic about the scale of change he can achieve in one window and has asked the club for three top additions.
It was explained that this included a new striker and a central midfielder, with Conor Gallagher and Ivan Toney thought to be among the names on the Lilywhites’ wishlist.
Tottenham need a new striker and midfielder
Shearer agrees that those are the two areas where Spurs most urgently need massive upgrades.
When asked where Tottenham need to strengthen, the Newcastle legend told BBC’s Match of the Day (19/05/24): “I think they need a top centre-forward and possibly another midfielder yeah.
Gary Lineker then responded: “Might need another central defender as well if there’s any injuries there.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Tottenham would likely add a centre-forward to their squad, particularly if Richarlison leaves, I do not think a number nine would be as big a priority for the club as a wide-forward, a number eight, a number six and a versatile full-back.
