Four cash-saving tips to host a gender reveal party for your impending arrival
MORE new parents are hosting US-inspired gender reveal parties for their babies’ imp-ending arrivals.
The get-togethers usually involve a gimmick to break the news of whether it’s a girl or boy.
Here are affordable ways to make your announcement . . .
BAKE A CAKE: If you’re good in the kitchen, whip up a Victoria sponge — but with one key difference.
Add blue food colouring for a boy, or pink for a girl, to the mixture before baking.
Don’t hold back, you want guests to be able to clearly identify the colour.
When cooled, cover the cake completely with a sheet of rolled white icing (£2.75 for 1kg from Sainsbury’s).
Parents can then slice into the bake to let the baby’s gender be known.
CHEAT CAKE: If you don’t fancy making your own cake, buy a large plain one instead. Morrisons’ celebration one for 12 people, priced £8.50, works perfectly.
Carefully flip it upside down and cut out a round hole in the middle.
Fill the gap with either pink of blue Smarties and cover with a cake board before turning it the right way again.
As you cut slices, the Smarties will come pouring out.
POP IT: A balloon filled with confetti is a simple but effective way of sharing the news and creates a little bit of drama.
Argos sells a “boy or girl” gender- reveal balloon for £5 complete with blue or pink confetti that you can add.
When popped, the confetti spills, out telling everyone the gender.
BIG BASH: A pinata is a fun way to signal a baby’s gender — pick up a rainbow-coloured donkey pinata for £6 at The Range.
Then fill with coloured sweets depending on whether the baby is male or female. You could pick out the strawberry-flavour Starburst from a pack, for example, or blue M&Ms.
The parents, or even guests, can then take it in turns to whack the pinata until it breaks open and all is revealed.
