Opinion: Who in their right mind would take the Chelsea manager’s job?
The announcement that Mauricio Pochettino was leaving Chelsea shouldn’t really have surprised anyone.
Since Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge, the American has turned the club into a circus and a laughing stock.
Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and now Pochettino all out on their ear, with club legend, Frank Lampard, reduced to a pathetic imitation of a Premier League manager during his caretaker stint at the club.
Why would anyone want to take the Chelsea job?
It’s stability that the club needs at this point in time, but Boehly and his cronies seem unable to provide it. If anything, exactly the opposite has come to pass over the past couple of seasons.
Transfer windows don’t appear to have been worked through with any diligence whatsoever. Rather, it seems that whatever Mr. Boehly wants, he shall have, regardless of whether that will upset the equilibrium of the squad.
It’s that kind of meddling which will surely put off any manager worth their salt from replacing the Argentinian.
Not only would the new incumbent need to accept that those above him, such as Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, will have a greater say in which players the club should buy, but he then has the arduous task of integrating players he doesn’t necessarily want into his way of working.
As was already seen on multiple occasions during 2023/24, a number of younger players aren’t suited for the pressures that playing for the Blues brings, and if Boehly thinks anyone coming in can just wave a magic wand and it will all be better, he has another think coming.
Chelsea were once known as the Kings of the King’s Road, but perhaps a more fitting moniker for the club owners these days would be the Clowns of Cromwell Road.
What an absolutely appalling mess they’ve created…
