Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Wednesday, May 22, 2024

Columbus Clippers 8, Omaha Stormchasers 7

Box Score · Clippers improve to 19-26

Columbus got a strong starting pitching performance from Darren McCaughan, who was recently acquired in a trade with the Miami Marlins for cash. McChaughan had a quality start, allowing one run on three hits in six innings with five strikeouts and two walks.

The bullpen struggled mightily, with Mason Hickman, Anthony Gose and Peter Strzelecki all giving up runs over the final three innings.

With teammate Johnathan Rodriguez promoted to Cleveland, Daniel Schneemann yelled “send me too!” by going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and three runs batted in, raising his OPS to a ridiculous 1.085 on the season.

Jhonkensy Noel also had a tremendous day at the plate, reaching base safely four times by going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks. Juan Brito went 2-for-5 with a double while Bryan Lavastida went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Akron RubberDucks 1, Harrisburg Senators 2

Box Score · RubberDucks fall to 25-15

Ryan Webb had a quality start, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Andrew Walters and Tyler Thornton both tossed a scoreless inning of relief, but Akron’s offense let the team down by only scoring one run.

That one run was courtesy of Joe Lampe, who went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his first of the season.

Kahlil Watson and Christain Cairo were the only other RubberDucks to reach base safely twice, with Watson going 1-for-3 with a walk and Cairo walking and getting hit by a pitch.

Lake County Captains 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 11

Box Score · Captains fall to 22-18

C.J. Kayfus did C.J. Kayfus things, going 4-for-5 and just missing the cycle by a home run on the day, scoring three runs.

Other standouts included Cooper Ingle, who went 2-for-3 with two walks, Jake Fox, who went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, Guy Lipscomb, who went 2-for-5 and Nate Furman, who went 1-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching was not pretty in this one as the Lake County rotation continues its recent struggles. Juan Zapata was shelled for four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 3 13 innings. Tanner Tulloch was even worse in long relief, allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits and a pair of walks in 2 23 innings.

The lone bright spot was Alaska Abney, who tossed two scoreless frames to end the game, lowering his season ERA to 1.23 in the process.

Lynchburg Hillcats 6, Fredericksburg Nationals 4

Box Score · Hillcats improve to 21-19

Lynchburg got a tremendous starting pitching performance from Yorman Gomez, giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk in six innings.

Ralphy Valazquez went 2-for-4 with three RBIS and a walk to lead the Hillcats offense. Jaison Chourio doubled. Christian Knapczyk went 1-for-3 with a walk. Esteban Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch, also stealing two bases. Manuel Mejias went 1-for-2 with two walks and Tommy Hawke walked twice.
