Becky Hammon revealed why her ESPN interview during the Aces' season opener was so awkward
Becky Hammon’s awkward ESPN interview during a game against the Phoenix Mercury on May 14 wasn’t because she was miffed about having to talk mid-game. It was because some random guy started talking in her ear.
As part of the WNBA’s broadcast deal with ESPN, coaches are required to do in-game interviews. As you might imagine, that could be distracting at some point for a coach trying to stay engaged. Becky Hammon’s interview has been making the rounds for the last week because many people assumed she was frustrated about chatting while a game was being sorted out.
According to Callie Lawson-Freeman of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Hammon explained that wasn’t the case. Some random man was actually in her ear, talking about sports betting, and she was so confused. Here’s what Becky shared with Callie:
“I didn’t hear the question. I heard the first one, and then there was just this man super loud in my ear,” Hammon said after practice Thursday. “There was no guy on the call. I couldn’t hear (Greene and Antonelli) at all.”
