Opening statements began Tuesday in the trial of Jacob De La Paz
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The trial of former teacher Jacob De La Paz on child pornography charges started on Tuesday with opening statements.
De La Paz is charged with attempted production of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography in connection with an incident on or about Jan. 12, 2023. He is accused of trying to entice a minor to produce child pornography.
With Judge David C. Joseph overseeing the trial, it started with testimony and evidence being given about the relationship between De La Paz and the victim, whom he was supposed to be tutoring in math. Several witness took the stand including the victim's boyfriend, those involved with the investigation and De La Paz himself.
There was also a discussion revolving around when the communication started between the De La Paz and the victim, when the it turned sexual and if De La Paz knew of the victim's age. Information about what educators can and cannot do when talking to students was given.
The trial is set to continue on Wednesday at 9 a.m. If De La Paz is convicted, he is facing a minimum of 15 years with a maximum of 30 years.
