Topeka receives more than $5 million for road safety

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The capital city received a more $5 million grant in an effort to improve pedestrian and traffic safety.

On Tuesday, a spokesman with the city of Topeka announced it received more than $4.3 million as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Topeka received the third largest amount awarded to 99 communities as part of the first round of grant awards. Build Kansas Fund is providing a 20% match to the grant's amount, taking the total funding to more than $5.3 million.

“By emphasizing safety impact, equity considerations, and collaborating with stakeholders," Director of Public Works Braxton Copley said, "we are committed to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for all members of our community."

With this grant, the city is going to create a comprehensive safety plan. The plan's initial focus will be on school zone safety improvements, according to a city spokesman.
