Human remains found in south London river

Members of the public made the grim discovery this morning.

Human remains have been found in a river, near a recycling centre in south London.

A crime scene has been set up in Mitcham, Merton, after the horror discovery by members of the public earlier today.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to Rawnsley Avenue, which sits alongside the River Wandle in Ravensbury Park.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing into how the person died.

At the moment, the victim has not been identified yet. The road has been closed while an investigation is ongoing at the scene.

River Wandle runs along the southern boundary of Ravensbury Park, an area of seven hectares which is designated a Local Nature Reserve.

The park remains open 24 hours, so anyone could enter the premises at any time.

A spokesperson for the police said: ‘On Tuesday, police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham after human remains were discovered in a river by members of the public.

‘Officers attended and have set up a crime scene, the road will remain shut until the scene is closed.

‘Enquiries are on-going into the circumstances and we await formal identification of the remains. At this early stage, we have not made any arrests.’
