17 and 18-year-old arrested, accused of stealing van

HERKIMER, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Two people were arrested after they allegedly fled police and face stolen property charges. Ethan Maurer,18, of Sherrill, and a 17-year-old from Canasota each face several charges.

According to Herkimer Police, they arrived at the scene where several witnesses reported seeing two males exit a van and running with an apparent shotgun. Officers say they later saw the males running north on N Washington and started a foot chase as one went through a yard just north of Green Street and the other ran toward Doxtader Street.

One was detained on Greet Street near the police station and the other on Harter Street at Folts Street. Both were taken to the station.

Officers were able to find the gun, with an expended round, in a N Washington Street residence and secured it. Continued investigation found the van involved was stolen from Canasota by both suspects. Police say the male with the shotgun also had a backpack with over 50 rounds of shotgun shells.

Charges:

    • Fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property (two counts)
  • 17-year-old charges:
    • Tampering with physical evidence
    • Fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property (two counts)

Maurer was held for arraign,ent in Herkimer County CAP Court. Police say additional charges are pending for possession of the stolen shotgun. The 17-year-old was held for arraignment, also with more pending charges.
