The newly minted Hokie on why he decided to leave Duke

As you know, Jaden Schutt has decided to transfer from Duke to Virginia Tech, where he’ll play for Mike Young in a three point-happy offense.

For Schutt, it makes sense. Hunter Cattoor is gone, Sean Pedulla is out too and there are lots of opportunities for him to get minutes. And as he told the Chicago Tribune, being a player, he wants to play: “I was able to improve, but at the end of the day, if you’re not able to get on the court it doesn’t show. In the end, I’m a basketball player. I want to play.”

It’s hard to argue with that. Mike Krzyzewski used to counsel his players to “run their own race,” and that makes sense. There may be guys in front of you but realistically, if you’re not good enough to get minutes, you have two choices: work harder and get better or try your luck somewhere else.

We’ve always admired Schutt, who seems as committed as any athlete to pass through Duke in a good while, and we’ve pulled for him. It just didn’t work out. Hopefully things will go better for him in Blacksburg and we’ll continue to pull for him - except of course when Duke and Virginia Tech tangle.
