Tony Cascarino believes that Tottenham need to prioritise signing a player who can dominate the midfield battle next season, insisting that they need an experienced head like Declan Rice or Rodri in the middle of the park.
Tottenham have a big summer ahead of the summer, with the side’s performances over the last couple of months demonstrating that the squad needs to be strengthened significantly if they wish to close the gap with the best sides in the Premier League.
It was reported by The Athletic last week that Ange Postecoglou wants four additions this summer – one each in defence and midfield and two in their forward line.
Various outlets have also reported that signing a top-class number six is a priority for Spurs since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp are expected to leave this summer, with Atalanta’s Ederson thought to be one of the names on their wishlist (Football.London).
Tottenham need their own version of Declan Rice
Cascarino agrees that a destroyer in the middle who can dominate the midfield battle is a pre-requisite for Spurs.
The pundit said on The Game Football Podcast about Tottenham: “They don’t have enough in midfield, for me, and if you’re going to play that high risk, high line, you have to have ball winners in midfield that dominate the play, because if you can’t stop the pass, you’re in trouble. And we’ve seen that at the end of the season.
“The Liverpool game, which I was at, was eye-catching in the fact that every time a Liverpool player got the ball and they got his head up, Tottenham were exploited, and it happened so often, and that’s been a bit of a common theme towards the end of the season.
“So I’d be interested in what areas of the pitch he reinforces, but I would clearly look at the midfield. I think you have to have a Rodri, a Rice, someone who’s going to dictate the play, rob the opposition of the ball often. If they don’t get that, I think Tottenham’s style will be flawed again next season.”

I expect Tottenham to prioritise signing a number six, a number eight, a versatile forward who can play across the frontline and perhaps a versatile defender like Joe Gomez, who can operate at centre-back as well as right-back.
