I DIYed a star-shaped fire pit in my yard – my set-up isn’t the Boy Scout way but it’s safer than burning my eyebrows

A HOME project enthusiast has shared the star-shaped fire pit they built in their yard.

They explained that they didn’t rely on the Boy Scout method to start fires but that their method prevented singed eyebrows.

Redditor Meestermcfeelme shared the home transformation in a viral post.

They unveiled the blazing eight-spiked star pit in a photo.

“My DIY Fire pit. Big undertaking but worth it,” they said.

Though they were willing to shell out money for the project, they admitted that the endeavor took time.

“Thankfully, I didn’t keep a budget, but I can tell you it took me a year’s worth of timespan,” they said.

“I’d say maybe 400 man-hours involved?

“Someone with experience could do it way faster.”

The Redditor estimated that materials totaled around $1,400, with $700 on concrete, $300 on wood, $200 on fill and gravel, $100 on wiring, and $100 on Copper LP line and fittings.

They had gotten creative with other materials, such as what they’d use to put together the fire ring.

“I should probably have mentioned earlier, but the actual fire ring is a piece of steel cut from an old LP tank,” they said.

“I surrounded the outside with firebrick and used high-temp [grout] for the granite near the edge. So far, seems to hold up great.

“Also unseen is a 3/8″ propane line running from the edge of the ring to a propane tank off-camera to the right.”

The handy technique proved useful when it came time to light any fires.

“This little hack uses a Taser to create spark and propane to light up the logs. It is, of course, not the Boy Scout way, but it’s way safer than what used to happen,” they explained.

Someone with experience could do it way faster.

The propane line, they added, helps prevent potential disasters.

“Beer + Gasoline = burned eyebrows,” they joked.

“It makes a pretty good plume and gets the wood burning really quickly.”

Many were impressed by their DIY, but one viewer said they’d changed their mind on building their own after seeing how much work it required.

“I was thinking about making a firepit. Thanks for talking me out of it,” they said.

One dissenter said the project only inspired them.

“I like fire pits, but this one in particular makes me want one. You made it so beautiful!” they said.
